European Central Bank launches public vote on new euro banknote designs
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten finalist designs for the first comprehensive redesign of euro banknotes since they entered circulation in 2002. The proposals are divided into two competing themes: “European Culture”, which would feature notable historical figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci and Nobel‑peace laureate Bertha von Suttner; and “Rivers & Birds”, which pairs European wildlife and river landscapes with symbols of EU institutions on the reverse side.
The ECB opened an online public consultation that runs until 21 September 2026, allowing any euro‑area resident to vote on their preferred design. More than 1,200 design submissions were narrowed down by a jury of 21 independent experts to the ten finalists. President Christine Lagarde said, "Euro banknotes are more than a means of payment – they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe."
A final decision on the winning theme is expected by the end of 2026, after which the new notes will undergo security testing and production. Existing euro notes will remain legal tender and continue circulating alongside the new series for several years.
