European cities implement measures to combat deadly air pollution

Air pollution was linked to nearly eight million deaths globally in 2023, with the Breathe Cities initiative estimating annual health costs at 7.12 trillion euros, approximately 6% of global GDP.

European cities are implementing various measures to combat pollution. In London, the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and other policies has contributed to a roughly 40% reduction in deaths related to toxic air, according to a study by Imperial College London. In Sofia, Bulgaria, authorities introduced a low emission zone to restrict traffic and encourage the modernization of heating systems following legal action from residents and environmental groups.

Health experts, including former WHO official Dr. Maria Neira, warn that pollutants can reach every organ, including the brain, potentially contributing to cognitive decline and diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Pollution also impacts childhood brain development and academic performance.
