European cities show varying balances of cost and quality of life
Recent data highlights significant disparities in the balance between cost of living and quality of life across European cities. According to Numbeo data analyzed by Visual Capitalist, Osijek, Croatia, ranks highest for balancing high quality of life with low costs. Other notable cities with favorable balances include Plzeň in the Czech Republic, Rijeka in Croatia, and Valencia in Spain.
In contrast, cities like Vienna and Copenhagen offer excellent quality of life but require premium spending. Major hubs such as London, Paris, and Brussels are categorized as having high costs paired with lower relative quality of life.
Housing affordability presents a severe challenge in specific regions. A report from the Deutsche Bank Research Institute, ‘Mapping the World’s Prices 2026’, identifies Lisbon as having the lowest disposable income for couples after paying rent in a study of 28 European cities. In Lisbon, a couple paying for a three-bedroom apartment in the city center may be left with only 253 euros per month after rent, as average rents significantly exceed local net salaries. This stands in stark contrast to Zurich, where couples retain over 9,000 euros monthly after housing expenses.
