European citizens petition to protect nature protection laws

Approximately 600,000 Europeans have signed a petition urging the European Commission to maintain existing nature and wildlife protection laws. The initiative, led by a coalition including BirdLife Europe, ClientEarth, the European Environmental Bureau, and WWF EU, seeks to prevent the loosening of environmental regulations.

This movement responds to a European Commission consultation regarding the Birds and Habitats Directives, which form the foundation of the Natura 2000 network. While the Commission states its objective is to conduct a “stress test” to ensure these directives can achieve environmental goals more efficiently and with less administrative burden, the coalition expresses concern that the review could lead to reduced levels of protection. The Commission's evaluation, expected to be completed by the end of 2026, will examine site assessments, species protection derogations, and monitoring obligations.
