ECAD Summit: European Coalition Against Drugs meets in Italy

The European Coalition Against Drugs (ECAD) held a high-level international summit at the San Patrignano community in Italy. Promoted by Italy and France, the coalition now includes 35 nations and serves as an operational platform to combat drug trafficking and addiction.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized a zero-tolerance policy, noting that modern drugs are more potent and accessible, with cannabis derivatives containing THC levels up to 30 times higher than in previous decades. She highlighted three strategic pillars: combating maritime trafficking—which accounts for approximately 80% of illegal drug entry into Europe—targeting criminal assets through a ‘follow the money’ approach, and prioritizing prevention, care, and recovery.

President Sergio Mattarella addressed the summit, stating that drug demand often stems from social isolation and fear of the future. He called for increased international cooperation to counter borderless criminal networks. Additionally, the Italian government has allocated over 210 million euros for 2026 to combat addiction and has implemented a national plan to address the misuse of fentanyl and synthetic opioids.
