Mediterranean Europe faces heat dome and rising September tourism

Europe is experiencing a significant weather and tourism shift as September begins. A heat dome over the Mediterranean is expected to bring temperatures reaching 38 to 42 degrees Celsius to southern regions, including Spain, France, Italy, and the Balkans. In France, meteorologists warn that temperatures could hit 40 degrees, potentially breaking September records following the hottest summer since 1900.

In contrast to the cooling trends in northern Europe, Mediterranean destinations are seeing a surge in interest. Crete, Greece, is reporting rapid growth in its accommodation sector, particularly in the Heraklion region, which is outperforming national averages. Travelers are increasingly drawn to the Mediterranean during the September shoulder season to avoid summer crowds and intense heat while still enjoying warm seas and mild weather.

Specific destinations highlighted for late-season travel include Rovinj in Croatia, Collioure in France, and various coastal and hiking locations in Spain, such as the Costa Blanca and the mountains near Madrid. These areas offer a more relaxed atmosphere and more manageable temperatures for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
