European Cockpit Association reports widespread pilot fatigue
A survey conducted by the European Cockpit Association (ECA) has revealed significant fatigue and safety concerns among pilots across Europe. The study, which included approximately 7,200 pilots from 32 countries, found that 76.8% of respondents experienced at least one microsleep while operating an aircraft in the four weeks prior to the survey.
Approximately 24% of pilots reported flying while fatigued without reporting it, while 52% admitted to operating a flight in the last three months when they should have declared themselves unfit due to exhaustion. The report highlights that fatigue levels in the industry have not seen significant improvements since the 2023 survey.
Many pilots cited a fear of negative consequences from management as a reason for not reporting fatigue. The survey also noted that fatigue levels are reported to be particularly high among pilots in Ireland and Malta. Aviation organizations are now calling for stronger fatigue-risk management, improved non-punitive reporting systems, and updated flight time limitations to address these systemic safety risks.
