European Commission allocates €1.09 bn for 1.1 GW of electrolyzer capacity in EU hydrogen auction

The European Commission has earmarked €1.09 billion to support nine renewable‑hydrogen projects across seven EU countries, providing up to 1.1 GW of electrolyzer capacity. The third European Hydrogen Bank auction received 58 bids from 11 nations and was oversubscribed, with demand exceeding the €1.3 billion budget by more than six times.

Project premiums range from €0.44 per kg (the lowest bid from Finland’s Cloudberry project) to €3.49 per kg for maritime‑aviation projects in Norway. Selected projects cover three categories: general renewable fuels of non‑biological origin (RFNBO) in Greece, Spain, Denmark and Austria; low‑carbon projects in Finland and Germany; and maritime‑aviation projects in Norway. The initiatives will receive fixed feed‑in premiums for up to ten years, aiming to boost clean‑hydrogen production and decarbonisation of industry and transport.
