European leaders debate energy crisis and industrial competitiveness

European leaders are addressing a deepening energy crisis characterized by surging costs and supply vulnerabilities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reported that since late February, gas prices have risen by 140% and diesel prices have doubled, adding approximately 100 billion euros to Europe's fossil fuel import costs.

To mitigate these impacts, several leaders have called for increased fiscal flexibility. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis have formally requested greater budget flexibility from the Commission to support citizens and industries. Meloni has also emphasized the need for clear political guidance at the upcoming European Council to protect industrial competitiveness and reduce energy costs.

In contrast, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and the Visegrad Group have expressed strong opposition to certain EU environmental policies. They are demanding that the implementation of the ETS2 system be delayed until after 2030 to prevent further economic strain on industry and households. Additionally, the Commission plans to launch a strategic dialogue regarding European refineries to bolster energy security and supply stability.
