European Commission approves depemokimab for severe asthma
The European Commission has approved depemokimab (Exdensur), the first ultra-long-acting biologic for treating severe asthma with type 2 inflammation and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). The medication utilizes a twice-yearly dosing regimen, which clinical experts suggest could represent a paradigm shift in patient care by significantly improving treatment adherence and reducing the burden of frequent administration.
Clinical data from the SWIFT and ANCHOR phase III trials demonstrated sustained efficacy for the drug. In Ireland, GSK has submitted applications to the Corporate Pharmaceutical Unit and the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics for potential reimbursement. Medical professionals have noted that the ability to manage symptoms with injections every six months offers a more patient-friendly approach, particularly for younger patients who must balance treatment with work and daily life.
