European Commission approves new insect protein sources for food
The European Commission has expanded the approval of insect-based protein sources for use in various food products. This includes the house cricket (Acheta domesticus), which can be processed into powder for use in baked goods, pasta, chocolate, and beer-like beverages. Additionally, the larvae of the flour beetle (Alphitobius diaperinus) are permitted in dried, frozen, powdered, or paste forms for use in cereals, snacks, and meat substitutes.
While these insects serve as a high-quality protein source and are viewed as a sustainable alternative to traditional livestock, experts continue to monitor the potential risks associated with their introduction into the food supply.
