EU Approves First Oral GLP‑1 Weight‑Loss Pill, Wegovy Tablet

The European Commission has granted marketing authorization for Wegovy oral semaglutide, the first GLP‑1 receptor‑agonist tablet for weight management in the EU. The 25 mg tablet is indicated for adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) who have at least one weight‑related comorbidity, to be used alongside a reduced‑calorie diet and increased physical activity. The approval follows positive assessments by the European Medicines Agency, citing the OASIS‑4 trial, which showed a mean weight loss of about 13‑17 % versus 2‑3 % with placebo over 64 weeks.

Novo Nordisk expects the product to reach the market in the third quarter of 2026. The new oral option is promoted as a more convenient alternative to the injectable formulation, potentially expanding treatment uptake across EU member states. In parallel, food companies such as Nestlé are adjusting product recipes to suit the taste preferences of GLP‑1 medication users, emphasizing stronger flavors and higher protein content in new lines.
