European Commission clarifies stance on Greek agricultural subsidies

The European Commission has clarified its position regarding the management of European agricultural subsidies in Greece, stating that a recent letter sent to Athens does not represent its final stance. The Commission described the communication as a ‘preliminary, administrative, and technical step’ that should not be interpreted otherwise.

Following reports regarding potential risks to community funding, the Commission acknowledged that the Greek government has taken ‘decisive measures’ to improve the management of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidies. While noting ‘significant progress’ and describing the cooperation between Greek authorities and EU services as ‘very constructive,’ the Commission emphasized that ‘there is still work to be done.’

Greek authorities continue to provide regular updates on the implementation of their Action Plan, with the Commission evaluating progress and providing recommendations for future steps to address past issues.
