European Commission considers increasing Schengen visa fees

The European Commission is considering a significant overhaul of the short-stay Schengen visa system, which may include the introduction of a harmonized European surcharge. This proposed fee would be added to the current 90 euro application fee for adults.

One scenario under review involves a 20 percent increase, which would raise the cost to 108 euros per application. The Commission cites rising management costs and notes that current Schengen visa fees are lower than those charged by destinations such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

While no official decision has been reached and the new rates are not yet in effect, the proposal could impact millions of travelers from third countries that require a visa, including citizens from Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. The Commission has launched a call for contributions as part of the revision process, which is expected to involve further discussions with EU member states.
