European Commission considers releasing frozen funds to Hungary
The European Commission has proposed releasing 4.2 billion euros in funds that were previously frozen due to rule-of-law conditionality, stating that Hungary has met the necessary requirements. Additionally, the Commission is reviewing the release of more than 10 billion euros from the Covid-19 relief fund.
EU Member of Parliament Daniel Freund has criticized this move, accusing the Commission of acting prematurely by closing all procedures. Freund suggested that funds should be released in stages rather than all at once. He noted that while the new government under Péter Magyar has made some positive steps, it has not yet corrected the previous administration's course regarding asylum laws, which the European Court of Justice previously found to be in violation of European standards.
