European Union provides aid to Colombia after devastating earthquake
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, specifically the Chocó region, on Monday. The disaster has resulted in at least 224 deaths and over 600 injuries, with reports indicating that 165 buildings have collapsed. The tremors were felt across the country, including in Bogotá, and in neighboring nations such as Ecuador and Panama.
In response, the European Union has mobilized initial emergency assistance, including 100,000 euros provided through the German Red Cross. The EU has also activated its Copernicus satellite service to assist with mapping and rescue operations, and has triggered its consular assistance mechanism to support EU citizens in the area.
International support is growing, with the United States pledging 15.5 million dollars in aid. Other nations, including France, Mexico, Israel, and Ecuador, have also offered assistance.
