European Commission designates ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox under DSA
The European Commission has designated ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox as subject to stricter oversight under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This move follows the services exceeding the threshold of 45 million monthly active users in the European Union.
Under these new classifications, ChatGPT has been named a Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE), while Reddit and Roblox are categorized as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs). The regulation aims to mitigate systemic risks, including the spread of illegal content, potential negative impacts on minors, and threats to election integrity.
Regulated entities will be required to implement enhanced risk mitigation measures, conduct regular risk assessments, and undergo annual independent audits. They must also share specific data with the European Commission and relevant authorities. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in significant penalties, with fines reaching up to 6% of a company's annual global revenue.
