European Commission implements new vehicle recycling regulation

The European Commission has announced the implementation of a new end-of-life vehicle regulation, establishing a unified regulatory framework across the EU to replace older directives. The regulation fundamentally changes requirements for vehicle design, production, and end-of-life processing.

Automakers are now required to prioritize dismantlability and recyclability during the design phase. The scope of the regulation has been expanded to include new vehicle categories, such as trucks, buses, and motorcycles.

Key mandates include specific targets for recycled plastic content in new vehicles: 15 percent starting in 2032 and 25 percent by 2036. The Commission intends to introduce similar binding targets for steel and aluminum beginning in 2033. The initiative aims to enhance industrial security, reduce dependence on imported virgin raw materials, and encourage investment in recycling capacity by keeping valuable materials within the European economy.
