European Commission labels Romania's A7 and A8 highways as security priorities

The European Commission has identified the construction of the A7 and A8 highways in Romania as a matter of European security and interest. In a response to a petition from the HaiCăSePoate Association, the Commission noted that connecting eastern Romania is a priority for security and cohesion, particularly due to the regional security context created by the war in Ukraine.

The Commission confirmed that these infrastructure projects could receive support through various mechanisms, including the Connecting Europe Facility, cohesion funds, regional funds, and the SAFE mechanism. Additionally, projects may benefit from funding if they align with the Military Mobility Strategy. While the Commission recognizes the strategic importance of linking eastern Romania with Moldova and Ukraine, it emphasized that the implementation of these priorities remains the responsibility of individual member states.
