European Commission launches EU maritime industrial strategy

The European Commission has introduced the EU Industrial Maritime Strategy, featuring the creation of the EU Industrial Maritime Value Chains Alliance (EMA). This initiative aims to strengthen Europe's maritime industrial base to enhance strategic autonomy, long-term competitiveness, and resilience.

The EMA will bring together public and private stakeholders from across the maritime ecosystem, including shipbuilders, equipment suppliers, shipowners, port operators, offshore energy providers, and academic institutions. The alliance's mandate includes mapping supply and demand in priority segments to identify bottlenecks and unfair trade practices.

Key objectives involve developing a pipeline of strategic projects to reinforce synergies along the European maritime value chain. This includes activities such as the construction, repair, and recycling of vessels, as well as the production of specialized maritime technologies. The alliance will work in coordination with Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) to facilitate large-scale research and industrial application.
