European Commission releases EU enlargement roadmap for Ukraine

The European Commission has released its annual enlargement package, providing an assessment of Ukraine’s progress toward European Union membership. While the Commission noted advancements in aligning national laws with EU standards, it declined to set a specific target year for Ukraine’s accession, unlike the timelines suggested for Moldova and Montenegro.

Key obstacles to Ukraine’s integration include the need for accelerated reforms in the rule of law, judicial independence, and anti-corruption measures. The Commission specifically highlighted the necessity of improving the appointment process for the Prosecutor General and strengthening the independence of state institutions. In the agricultural sector, while progress was noted through new legislation, the Commission urged Kyiv to implement previous recommendations and accelerate the establishment of farm sustainability and management systems.

Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos stated that Ukraine, Albania, and Moldova could join the EU in coming years if they sustain reform efforts. However, the roadmap remains open-ended, with the Commission emphasizing that the pace of structural reforms is critical to moving forward.
