European Commission Praises Montenegro's State Prosecutor Office for Combating Organized Crime and War Crimes

The European Commission’s latest Rule of Law Report commended Montenegro’s State Attorney Office (VDT) for achieving “exceptional results” in tackling organized crime, corruption and war crimes. Reforms have strengthened the capacities of the Supreme and Special State Prosecutor’s offices, enabling more effective cross‑border investigations and prosecutions. The Commission highlighted proactive investigations of criminal groups, enhanced cooperation with EU justice and security bodies and prosecutorial offices in Latin America, and an increase in cases and indictments for high‑level corruption.

Notable achievements include the conviction for a war crime committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, new proceedings on war crimes and crimes against humanity, and improved responses to domestic‑violence cases, journalist protection, torture investigations and human‑trafficking offences. The report also urged continued capacity‑building and reforms to sustain public trust and efficiency in the justice system.
