European Commission prepares Schengen visa reforms and potential fee increases

The European Commission is preparing a revision of the Schengen visa Code for short-term stays. Following a consultation document released on September 8, 2026, the proposed reform aims to update procedures, access criteria, and costs as part of the first European visa strategy.

One key aspect under consideration is the introduction of an additional European surcharge to be added to current visa fees. This revenue would be used to fund and modernize common visa policies. While no specific amounts have been decided, current adult fees stand at 90 euros. The Commission emphasizes that these plans are preparatory and the legislative proposal is expected in the first quarter of 2027.

The reform also focuses on digitalization and efficiency. Proposed measures include creating a directory of partner companies to provide priority appointments and shorter processing times for reliable business travelers. Additionally, the strategy aims to enhance security, facilitate legitimate travel, and improve digital interoperability between visa and border systems by 2028.
