European Commission proposes affordable housing law
The European Commission has proposed an affordable housing law designed to support member states and municipalities in addressing housing accessibility and affordability, particularly in high-pressure areas. The initiative aims to provide legal certainty for local authorities when implementing measures to manage housing shortages and the impact of non-primary residential uses, such as tourism, on local markets.
European Parliament member Miriam Lexmann noted that while solutions primarily lie with member states, European-level support can foster better business conditions and competitive industries. According to Eurobarometer data, over 50% of urban residents consider housing an immediate and pressing issue. The proposed law seeks to resolve legal conflicts regarding compatibility with EU law, ensuring that local actions remain consistent with the EU single market.
