Canada proposed as first EU associate member

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that Canada become the first associate member of the European Union. This proposal, made during her annual State of the Union address, highlights deepening transatlantic ties in strategic sectors such as defense, critical raw materials, and the Arctic.

Canada and the EU have already strengthened cooperation through the 150 billion euro SAFE defense industry fund, with Canada becoming the first non-European nation to join. Additionally, trade between the two entities reached 130.8 billion euros last year.

In a separate development regarding environmental cooperation, the EU and Canada have helped secure at least 211 million euros in commitments for the OceanEye International Alliance. This initiative aims to bolster the Global Ocean Observing System. The EU contributed an additional 92 million euros to the cause, while Canada pledged 82 million Canadian dollars over five years to expand its ocean observation capabilities.
