European Commission proposes EU Kids Act for digital safety

Following the French Constitutional Council's rejection of a domestic law banning social media for children under fifteen, a new European regulatory proposal known as the ‘EU Kids Act’ has been introduced by the European Commission.

The proposed regulation aims to prohibit social media use for children under 13 and implement ‘introductory accounts’ under parental supervision for those up to age 15. Unlike a directive, this regulation would apply directly without requiring national transposition or a vote by deputies, bypassing the need for domestic constitutional review.

The scope of the regulation is broad, targeting not only social media platforms but also app stores, operating systems, conversational agents, and online gaming.
