European Commission proposes unlocking 4.2 billion euros for Hungary
The European Commission has proposed unlocking 4.2 billion euros in cohesion funds for Hungary. This recommendation follows an assessment that the Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has implemented sufficient corrective measures to address rule-of-law concerns that previously jeopardized EU financial interests.
According to the Commission, Hungary has addressed deficiencies in public procurement, anti-corruption frameworks, conflict of interest risks, and the effectiveness of prosecutorial actions. The proposal also aims to restore full access to the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programs for Hungarian students and researchers.
The 4.2 billion euro release is part of a broader 16.4 billion euro package of previously frozen funds. The Council of the European Union now has one month to decide on the proposal to lift the protective measures originally adopted in 2022.
