European Commission proposes sustainable investment deal with Ecuador

The European Commission has submitted a proposal to the Council for a Sustainable Investment Facilitation Agreement (SIFA) with Ecuador. This marks the first SIFA agreement negotiated between the EU and a Latin American nation.

The agreement aims to assist EU companies in investing and expanding their operations within Ecuador by reducing bureaucratic hurdles and regulatory uncertainty. It targets various sectors of the Ecuadorian economy, with a specific focus on renewable energy and raw materials—areas identified as high interest for both European and local investors.

The initiative aligns with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which supports sustainable infrastructure in sectors such as energy, sanitation, and waste management. In 2024, the volume of EU foreign direct investment in Ecuador reached 9.1 billion euros. Following Council approval, the agreement must be sent to the European Parliament for consent before it can enter into force.
