European Commission recognizes solar thermal energy as strategic opportunity
The European Commission has recognized solar thermal energy as a “huge opportunity” for energy security and decarbonization. EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen expressed support for proposals made by MEP Georgios Maniatis to ensure solar thermal technology receives a distinct strategic focus within the EU energy mix.
Following these discussions, the Commission has committed to publishing an independent European Strategy for Heating and Cooling. This initiative aims to remove barriers within the energy system and across solar thermal value chains. The move addresses a critical gap: while heating and cooling account for approximately 50% of the EU’s energy needs, only one-quarter of that demand is currently met by renewable sources.
The strategy seeks to prevent solar thermal applications from being overshadowed by photovoltaic developments. Proponents highlight that solar thermal technology is a mature, competitive European solution with low dependence on critical raw materials, making it vital for achieving energy autonomy.
