European Commission rolls out website and standards for Digital Product Passports
The European Commission has launched a new website for the Digital Product Passport (DPP) initiative. The site explains the DPP’s purpose of improving transparency across product value chains by providing digital information on product composition, circularity, environmental impact, safety, and end‑of‑life guidance. It offers resources for economic operators, public authorities, consumers and other stakeholders and will be expanded with guidelines, webinars and sector‑specific data as implementation progresses under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).
In parallel, the Commission published the first set of six harmonised European standards in the Official Journal, creating the technical framework for DPPs. The standards cover data exchange protocols, unique identifiers, digital carriers (e.g., QR codes), storage, APIs and system interoperability, allowing DPPs to operate uniformly across Europe. While the standards enable DPPs, they do not prescribe the exact content for every product, and certain sectors such as office printers, toner and ink cartridges are currently excluded from the rollout.
