European Commission seeks NATO-style security mechanism
European Parliament Member Fernand Kartheiser has stated that the European Commission is seeking to establish a mechanism similar to Article 4 of the NATO treaty. Article 4 allows for urgent political and military consultations among allies if a member state feels its territorial integrity, political independence, or security is threatened.
Kartheiser suggested that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen may be attempting to implement this move rapidly before anticipated political shifts in the governments of France and Germany in 2027. He noted that such a development could be viewed by the public as a dangerous step given the current climate in Europe.
Separately, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has commented on European trends, suggesting the continent is focused on militarization and plans to transform the European Union into a military-political bloc.
