European Commission selects 46 strategic projects to secure critical raw materials

The European Commission has selected 46 new strategic projects across 16 EU member states to bolster the supply of critical raw materials. These initiatives aim to diversify supply chains and reduce the Union's dependence on non-EU suppliers, particularly China.

The selected projects, chosen from 102 applications, involve an estimated investment of 21.1 billion euros. The portfolio includes eight extraction projects, 11 processing projects, 19 recycling projects, and eight integrated projects that combine different stages of the value chain. These efforts target 15 of the 17 strategic materials identified by EU legislation, with a heavy focus on metals essential for the battery, automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors, such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earths.

This move aligns with the Critical Raw Materials Act, which sets 2030 targets for the EU to achieve 10% of its annual consumption through domestic extraction, 40% through processing, and 25% through recycling. Participating projects are expected to benefit from streamlined administrative procedures and improved access to European funding mechanisms.
