European Commission survey shows rise in physical activity
A European Commission Eurobarometer survey indicates that Europeans are engaging in more sports and physical activity compared to 2022. Approximately 39% of respondents reported never exercising, a decrease from 45% in 2022.
Despite the overall increase, significant disparities persist based on income, age, and education levels. Roxana Mînzatu, Executive Vice-President for Social Rights and Skills, noted that the ability to participate remains heavily dependent on these socioeconomic factors.
Regional differences are stark. Finland and Denmark lead in daily exercise, with 21% and 20% of respondents respectively exercising every day. Conversely, Portugal shows the lowest activity levels, with 68% of participants reporting they never exercise, followed closely by Greece and Romania at 66%.
Participants cited physical health, relaxation, and mental well-being as primary motivations. Most respondents agreed that staying active improves mental health and fosters community ties, particularly for marginalized groups. Lack of time remains the primary obstacle for those wishing to exercise more.
