European Commission targets 37.5 billion euro savings through bureaucracy reduction

The European Commission has launched a simplification agenda aimed at reducing administrative burdens for businesses. The initiative seeks to decrease total economic administrative costs by at least 25 percent and reduce the burden on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by at least 35 percent, potentially resulting in annual savings of 37.5 billion euros.

This push follows concerns regarding regulatory fragmentation within the EU single market. Current barriers in goods and services are estimated to have a cost equivalent to 44 percent and 110 percent in tariffs, respectively, due to differing standards and procedures across member states. Reducing these barriers to levels comparable to trade between US states could theoretically increase European productivity by nearly seven percent.

In response, 15 EU member states, led by Austria and supported by nations including Germany and Italy, have called for a consolidation phase. They are advocating for a systematic review of existing laws, the elimination of duplicate reporting requirements, and a pause on new legislative processes to assess the cumulative impact of regulations on competitiveness.
