European Commission targets 46% electricity share in EU consumption by 2040

The European Commission has unveiled an Electrification Action Plan that aims to raise electricity’s share of final energy consumption in the EU from the current 23 % to 46 % by 2040. The plan seeks to cut reliance on imported fossil fuels, projecting reductions of more than 70 % in gas imports and over 40 % in oil imports, and to save up to €260 billion annually on fossil‑fuel expenditures. Key measures include lowering regulated electricity prices for industry, encouraging the installation of heat pumps, expanding electric vehicle uptake, and boosting flexible demand and storage.

In parallel, rooftop photovoltaic systems are becoming a common feature of Czech households, allowing owners to generate their own electricity, power heating, hot‑water and electric‑vehicle charging, and reduce dependence on utilities. Experts note that well‑designed solar installations can become financially self‑sustaining within a few years while providing long‑term energy independence and lower household energy bills.
