European Commission to exempt Poland from migrant relocation pact
The European Commission is expected to officially announce on November 4 that Poland will be exempt from the EU migration pact's mandatory relocation and financial contribution requirements for 2027.
Unofficial findings suggest the decision is based on Poland's ongoing migration challenges, specifically the large number of refugees from Ukraine residing in the country and the continuous pressure on the border with Belarus. Under the EU's solidarity mechanism, member states must typically support countries under migration pressure through migrant relocation, financial payments of approximately 20,000 euros per unaccepted migrant, or technical and equipment assistance.
Poland currently holds an exemption through the end of this year. The upcoming proposal to the Council of the EU to exclude Poland from the mechanism is expected to be a formality, following assessments that categorize the country as facing significant migration pressure.
