European Commission urges EU states to speed up use of Just Transition Fund for energy crisis

The European Commission has called on all EU member states to accelerate the deployment of resources from the Just Transition Fund, part of the Cohesion Fund for 2021‑2027, to address the ongoing energy crisis. In a letter to national ministers, Executive Vice‑President for Cohesion and Reforms Rafaele Fito urged faster procedures and the creation of new financing tools, stating that “states can use the Fund through various measures, including the creation of new financing tools for the energy crisis.”

Commission press officer Matthias Berset highlighted that the letter aims to encourage countries to support the communities most vulnerable to the energy crunch. The speed of fund allocation will depend on each member state’s re‑prioritisation of proposals, which must be submitted to the Commission for approval and re‑allocation of the money.
