European Commission warns against €159 billion EU budget cuts

The European Commission has issued a warning regarding proposed cuts of €159 billion to the European Union's next long-term budget. The reduction, which would represent an approximately 8% decrease for the 2028-2034 period, has been promoted by the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU following pressure from a group of fiscally conservative nations led by Germany.

Commission budget official Stéphanie Rizo reportedly cautioned ambassadors of the 27 member states that eliminating these funds from emergency reserves would diminish Europe's ability to respond to crises over the next seven-year fiscal cycle. Diplomats expressed specific concern that cuts to flexibility mechanisms would leave the bloc without sufficient resources to support sectors such as agriculture during future emergencies.
