European Commission warns of difficult winter for energy prices

European Commission Energy Spokesperson Anna-Kaïsa Itkonen has warned of a ‘very difficult winter’ regarding energy prices. She expressed support for the recent G7 decision to release emergency oil reserves, describing the move as a necessary and positive step to stabilize the oil market.

Itkonen noted that G7 leaders have also committed to opposing export bans, which could further exacerbate limited global supplies. The Commission emphasized that protecting households and businesses from sudden price spikes remains a top priority.

While the Commission is prepared to coordinate through the Oil Coordination Group or the EU Energy Security Working Group, Itkonen clarified that the technical organization and management of the reserve release fall under the jurisdiction of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
