European Commissioner warns of housing crisis and energy insecurity

European Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has characterized the housing crisis in Europe as an emergency, noting that the issue varies across member states but requires urgent political action. He acknowledged that policymakers may not have taken the growing affordability gap seriously enough in previous years.

Jørgensen highlighted that the crisis is compounded by energy insecurity, noting that approximately 50 million Europeans face difficulties paying heating bills during winter, forcing a choice between food and warmth. To address these issues, the European Commission is modifying state aid rules to better support affordable housing construction and is investigating the impact of short-term rentals on local housing markets.

Additionally, concerns remain regarding energy supply stability for the upcoming winter season.
