European competitiveness and renewable energy trends discussed

At the 11th Business Forum Greece-Sweden, leaders discussed the European Union's ability to remain competitive amidst technological revolutions, energy transitions, and defense needs. Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras emphasized the necessity of implementing the Draghi and Letta reports to strengthen the single market. He also advocated for common European borrowing, citing the Recovery and Resilience Facility as a success, while noting the divide between pro-debt nations like Greece and more cautious northern countries like Sweden.

In the energy sector, renewable sources accounted for 54.1% of electricity production in the EU during the second quarter of 2026. Solar energy emerged as the leading renewable source, representing 41.6% of all renewable electricity production. While Latvia led the EU with a 97.7% renewable share, Greece ranked 17th, performing slightly below the EU average.
