European Council holds strategic talks on energy and competitiveness
Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša participated in a two-day European Council meeting in Brussels, where leaders engaged in strategic discussions regarding the future of the European Union. Key topics included European economic competitiveness, energy prices, EU enlargement, continued support for Ukraine, migration, and the EU's multiannual financial framework for 2028–2034.
Janša noted that the discussions were unusually intensive, covering at least three major themes simultaneously. A significant portion of the debate focused on how to lower energy costs to bolster European industry. Janša identified the previous approach to nuclear energy as a key mistake in past energy policies, arguing that nuclear power should play a much more substantial role in ensuring a reliable and affordable electricity supply. He also suggested that a serious revision of the EU's CO2 emission trading policy may be necessary in the coming years to align the energy transition with the practicalities of securing new energy sources.
