European Council rejects migration coordination requests from Italy, Denmark, and Poland

The European Council has failed to adopt specific requests from Denmark, Italy, and Poland regarding migration coordination. The three nations sought to establish a framework for coordinating national measures that impact other member states.

This follows the crisis in Ceuta, linked to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s announcement regarding the regularization of 500,000 migrants. The incident raised security concerns regarding the potential for irregular entries into the Schengen area and possible terrorist infiltration.

Despite these tensions, the final Council conclusions omitted language describing illegal immigration as a major challenge causing social problems or threatening societal cohesion. Instead, the text only included a vague reference to developing an emergency framework with the cooperation of the European Commission.
