European Council summit to be held in Rome in March 2027

European Union leaders are preparing to hold a European Council summit in Rome on March 18 and 19, 2027. The meeting is intended to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, which established the European Economic Community and Euratom in 1957.

This move would be an exceptional diplomatic departure from standard procedure, as formal European Council summits are typically held in Brussels under the Treaty of Nice. Moving the summit requires unanimous approval from all 27 member states. The initiative, proposed by European Council President António Costa, has reportedly gained support from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

In addition to the summit of the 27 heads of state and government, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced plans for a ‘Congress of Europe’ in Rome. This event would include intellectuals, scientists, and civil society representatives to discuss the progress and future of European integration.
