European defense industry faces raw material and logistics bottlenecks
The European defense industry is experiencing a significant surge in investment as NATO members increase spending to strengthen military capabilities. While companies such as Rheinmetall, HENSOLDT, and Leonardo are expanding production capacities for tanks, air defense systems, and drones, new bottlenecks are emerging.
One critical issue is the supply of raw materials. Modern defense technology relies heavily on specialized metals and rare earth elements for permanent magnets used in radar systems, sensors, and guided weapons. Without these materials, the production of advanced electronic warfare and precision systems is significantly hindered.
Additionally, defense logistics presents a major challenge. Maintaining agile and secure supply chains is difficult due to risks of sabotage, cyberattacks, and the need for interoperability between different nations. The industry is also grappling with the fragility of high-tech component supply chains and the logistical complexities of operating in contested environments.
