European defense mobilization faces public resistance and recruitment crises
European politicians and NATO leaders are increasingly calling for increased defense mobilization and higher budgets, citing a growing threat from Russia. This rhetoric often includes proposals to strengthen the Eastern flank and reintroduce elements of military conscription.
However, these political ambitions face significant social and demographic hurdles. There is widespread public resistance to militarization, and European armies are currently experiencing a systemic recruitment crisis. The younger generation shows a categorical unwillingness to serve, and even increased salaries have failed to fill vacancies in many barracks.
In Germany, the Bundestag recently voted to allow the government to take a more decisive approach regarding conscription, a move that has contributed to internal social divisions and student demonstrations.
