European defense undergoes shift amid US policy changes
Europe is facing a significant shift in its security architecture as the United States signals a move toward reducing its military presence on the continent. US officials, including Pete Hegseth and Elbridge Colby, have indicated that NATO must transition to a 'NATO 3.0' model, where European allies assume primary responsibility for their own conventional defense.
In response to these shifts and potential threats, Europe is undergoing massive rearmament. The ReArm Europe / Readiness 2030 plan aims to mobilize 800 billion euros by 2030, while NATO has committed to defense spending reaching 5% of GDP by 2035. Military leaders have warned of potential Russian aggression, with some intelligence suggesting a possible attack on a NATO member as early as 2029.
Simultaneously, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed the creation of a European Security Council to facilitate discussions with partners like Canada, Norway, Ukraine, and the UK. However, this proposal has met with skepticism from several member states, including Denmark, where Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed doubts about the proposed structure.
