European destinations implement incentives for sustainable tourism
European destinations are increasingly adopting incentive-based programs to promote sustainable tourism and combat the negative effects of mass travel. Following the success of Copenhagen’s CopenPay initiative, which rewards responsible behavior—such as using public transport, collecting litter, or participating in community gardening—with perks like free bike rentals, boat trips, and meals, other regions are implementing similar models.
In the United Kingdom, Exmoor National Park offers discounts to visitors who contribute to nature conservation or use eco-friendly transport. Alpine ski resorts in Italy, France, and Switzerland are providing discounted lift passes to travelers who arrive by train rather than car. Additionally, cultural sites in Normandy, France, offer concessions for those arriving via bus, train, or bicycle. In Germany, cities like Bremen and Berlin are using free sightseeing tours and discounted entries to encourage environmentally conscious exploration.
