European destinations implement incentives for sustainable tourism

European tourism is seeing a shift toward rewarding responsible behavior and managing high visitor volumes. In Copenhagen, the CopenPay initiative allows tourists to earn benefits like free bike rentals, boat rides, or meals by participating in social or environmental activities such as cleaning up waste or working in community gardens.

Similar incentive models are being implemented in the UK's Exmoor National Park, where visitors can receive discounts for eco-friendly actions like collecting litter or using public transport. In the Alps, destinations like Italy's Via Lattea and various locations in France offer significant discounts on ski passes and equipment for travelers who arrive by train. Switzerland also provides museum access and travel perks for those using the Swiss Travel Pass.

Conversely, some regions are facing challenges with overtourism and consumer experiences. In Slovenia, the Savica Waterfall has introduced a new fee system to manage environmental pressure. Meanwhile, travelers have reported issues with aggressive driving in Italy and the UK, and hidden costs or inconsistent pricing in destinations like Gran Canaria.
