Record‑low water levels on the Danube and the Rhine, caused by an extensive heatwave and drought across Central and Western Europe, have forced river cruise operators to alter itineraries and transfer passengers by bus. The European Drought Observatory reports alert conditions in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Romania and the Balkans, with the Danube at Paks reaching a historic low of minus 42 inches. Companies such as Avalon Waterways and AmaWaterways warned that ships may have to skip sections of the rivers, leading to multiple ship changes, repeated packing, and missed shore excursions.

Travelers have described being bused downstream, spending hours transferring between vessels, and losing the scenic sailing experience that originally attracted them.
